Poultry Questions

  • We are hatching baby chicks this year; what do we need to feed them?

Once the chicks are removed from the incubator they will need access to fresh water in shallow waterers to prevent drowning, and a chick starter mash. Some people feed a medicated starter to prevent cocidosis, but it is not necessary for every chicken producer. Laying breeds need to start out on a 21% protein and can drop to an 18% grower as early as 4 weeks of age. They will remain on a grower until they lay their first egg, at which time you begin to offer a layer pellet or mash.

  • I want to raise laying hens for the first time, but there are so many breeds! What kind should I get?

One of the most popular laying breeds is the Rhode Island Red. If you are looking for best egg production we suggest the Golden Comet. A lot of folks get a kick out of the colorful eggs from the Araucana chickens- they even have feathers on their legs!
